Bridget's Recipe Corner

Yesterday morning I defrosted and marinated some sirloin steak. Although I went with an Asian-inspired marinade, I was not altogether certain what else I wanted to go with it. As my day progressed at work, I thought about making Chow Fun. My 17-year-old is crazy about that dish and orders it every time we go to PF Changs. However, I didn't realize that finding the right noodles would be so difficult. Nothing like switching gears at 6pm while strolling the aisles at Whole Foods and answering phone calls from teenage boys arguing about computer games. Thank goodness for the "ignore" button on my cell phone. Did I just say that? Sorry. Anyway, I guess being flexible is always a good idea. So, I bought some egg noodles, some cabbage and assorted veggies and decided to go with a veggie/noodle stir fry instead. A fairly healthy and tasty dinner, it was seemingly enjoyed by my all. I did get first dibs on the leftovers. I have to say I'm looking forward to lunch today ... Hope you enjoy it too.

Asian Steak Stir Fry

Marinade:
1.5 lb sirloin steak

2 T. sesame seeds

1/2 c. honey

1/2 c. soy sauce

1/2 c. cider vinegar

2 t. chili paste/Sambal Olek (can buy in the Asian food section)

2 t. finely chopped garlic

3 T. sugar

Mix all ingredients in small bowl, blending well. Place meat in large zipper bag. Pour marinade on top, seal tightly and let marinate 5-6 hours. When ready, preheat grill, cook steak. Remove from heat, let rest at least 10 minutes. Slice into thin pieces and serve on top of stir fry noodles/veggies.

Noodles and stir fry:

1 pkg. Blue Dragon Egg Noodles -these were great, bought them at Whole Foods

1/2 head, Napa cabbage, sliced thin

1/2 head Savoy cabbage, sliced thin

1/2 c. green onions, cut in 3/4" pieces

2 carrots, grated

1 c. broccoli florets, cut into small pieces

1 1/2 c. Shitake mushrooms, thinly sliced

1 red pepper, cut into thin strips

2 t. finely chopped garlic

sesame oil

peanut/canola oil

Bring large pot of water to boil and cook noodles per directions. Remove from heat, drain. Heat oil in large pan or wok. When hot, add garlic and toss gently, coating the pan. Add cabbage, carrots, pepper and broccoli and 1/2 the sauce. Let cook approximately 3-4 minutes, then add onions and mushrooms and remaining stir fry sauce. Cook 3-4 more minutes. Remove from heat and place in large bowl. Heat 1 t. oil in same pan. Add cooked noodles, tossing well. Cook approximately 3-5 minutes. Add stir fried veggies, mixing well. Remove from heat and place in large bowl or platter. Add thinly sliced meat on top and serve.

Stir fry sauce:

1/2 c. soy sauce

2 T. sesame seeds

2 t. sesame oil

3 t. chili paste

Mix in small bowl. Adjust seasonings as necessary. Add to stir fry.

Enjoy with your favorite beverage. An Alsatian Gewürztraminer should pair nicely or you might even try Rojo Mojo (a Spanish Shiraz).
